Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (P.L.A.R) is the formal evaluation and credit-granting process through which students may obtain credits for prior learning.
The PLAR process is required for all students educated outside of Ontario to become part of the Ontario high school system. This process consists of a review of past education and a series of subject-specific tests, that are based on Ontario curriculum.
PLAR is used to assess your knowledge and skills in relation to specific criteria. The establishment of clear, measurable criteria is the key to a high-quality PLAR process.
A variety of methods might be used to assess your prior learning. These may include demonstrations, structured interviews, and presentations of examples or products. Many organizations use written tests to assess an applicant’s prior learning. Some organizations offer portfolio development courses. A portfolio is an organized collection of documents and other items that show what an individual knows and can do.
